Hello, my name is Cindy Kang. I’m an illustrator and picture book artist in New York City. Since graduating from SVA, I’ve created illustrations for various clients across advertising and publishing, including Samsung, Macy’s, and Penguin Random House. I’ve also illustrated two children’s books, King Sejong Invents an Alphabet and The Can Caravan.
Letter Drop is where I share my experiences and reflections on living and working as an illustrator—particularly in NYC, as someone from elsewhere. It’s a space for observing, questioning, and making sense of both creative work and daily life.
Here is what you’ll find in each section:
Journal: Reflections on my art career: finding my artistic voice, navigating uncertainty, and redirecting myself when things don’t go as expected. I also write about the small and big career decisions that shape a creative life like finding agents, switching industries, and breaking into publishing.
Occasionaly, I share notes on my sojoong (small, precious) life between Seoul and New York.
Sunday Sketchbook: Once a month, I gather and archive evidence from my studio practices. Most sketches are bad, but some are good, and a few may someday grow into larger paintings. I share sketches, new art supplies, and technique explorations.
A Letter to You: A handwritten letter, sent once a month. Part reflection, part quiet encouragement, written for anyone who might need it. We’re in this bumpy creative journey together.
📮 P.S. — a section I stay a little longer to chat about things I didn’t say out loud, more candidly and personally. This is where we talk shop: what works, what doesn’t, and the ideals and realities no one explain–plus just a little industry 🍵.
Paid subscribers receive full access to 📮P.S. and all locked posts across sections.
I hope you’ll join me!
